BITLOCKER DISASTER! Ready for Ventura? and more!

BITLOCKER DISASTER! DIsable it IMMEDIATELY! WARNING WILL ROBINSON!
A windows update (KB5012170) is TRIPPING BITLOCKER causing it do demand a recovery key before it will permit rebooting!
THIS IS A DISASTER I already have had a half-dozen customers with this problem and have ONLY been able to save the data for TWO of them!
Some customers NEVER TURNED ON BITLOCKER – and hence THERE IS **NO** recovery key that they can access! Other times if you turned it on and remember your microsoft login, you MAY find the bitlocker key stored there (one customer it was there, another it was not). IF YOU NEED THIS KEY AND DONT HAVE IT YOU WILL LOSE **ALL** YOUR DATA ON YOUR DRIVE!
Yikes! What a disaster!
ALL CUSTOMERS — IMMEDIATELY TURN IT *OFF*!!! Before this happens to you!
Go to start-control panel (or type the Windows and R keys simultaneously and enter ‘control’)
under System and Security you will find BitLocker Drive Encryption
Turn it OFF!!!!!!!!
Why was bitlocker on? Many customers get bitlocker turned ON on new computers by default; It would say something like ‘waiting for microsoft account login to complete…’ but bitlocker IS active and YOU dont know the key!
ELIMINATE IT before it eliminates YOU!

Geez!!

FIRST THOUGHTS ON VENTURA – Mac OS 13.

I’ve been playing with Ventura on a computer at the shop. Its interesting. Both in what it is doing and in how many systems it is orphaning!
To run ventura, you need:

  • 2017 iMac/iMac Pro and later
  • 2018 MacBook Air and later
  • 2017 MacBook Pro and later
  • 2019 Mac Pro and later
  • 2018 Mac mini and later
  • 2017 MacBook and later
  • 2022 Mac Studio and later

I’ll tell you what I think of it. But for now — DONT UPGRADE. Geez Monterey still has a huge pile of issues!

BLAST FROM THE PAST! FROM THE FILES OF THE ELDEST GEEK:
Another interesting customer I had in Colorado many years ago. This fellow walks in. Says ‘I need a new computer. I dont want an invoice. I dont want to give you my name. I’ll give you 9 one-ounce gold coins and I dont want any change’.
Done I says.
In the mountains above Boulder Colorado, there are a variety of groups who want to be left alone. Never knew who this customer was. But 9 one ounce gold coins was a very good sale!
Next story – about when I found an FBI business card in my door in Pinecliffe (on top of the rockies) – saying ‘contact me at your earliest convenience’ 🙂

THE ELDEST GEEK – Question and Answer:
Q – What do I think of Apple’s M1 Processor?
A – A gutsy choice. Switching from Intel was a huge risk. But Apple has done this before – remember they used to use the PowerPC processors – and spent millions explaining they were SOOOO much better than the Intel Pentium chips!! The M1 is a RISC processor. It runs super fast, with a very small instruction set It emulates intel processor commands by sequences of its own much faster much simpler instructions. The processor can be far simpler in construction – and run far faster. AND consumes far less power! But the trade-off is that some software will REALIZE its not running on an Intel cpu and may not function properly. Also, no M1 can run any of the older versions of Mac OS (certainly not older than Catalina). Also, Bootcamp will NOT install on an M1 processor! But it’s an interesting choice.
